Iced Banana Matcha Latte in a glass cup, garnished with fresh banana slices, served with a straw.

Banana milk is so creamy and delicious, making it a perfect drink for kids or adults with a sweet tooth. And it naturally sweetens the drink when paired with coffee, like the Iced Banana Peanut Butter Latte recipe.

And if you're a matcha lover, you'll find a nutty matcha and creamy banana milk combo so irresistible! You won't need any added sweetener. Banana is a healthy and creamy way to naturally sweeten your matcha.

And please remember, this is not a smoothie. It's a banana milk matcha latte! Matcha is prepared with the traditional method and mixed with banana milk. If you're interested in how to prepare matcha tea, I have an ultimate matcha guide!

I also have a Matcha Banana Smoothie Recipe if you're looking for something more satiating! Perfect for an energy-boosting pre and post-workout fuel. And if you love Japanese tea drinks, give it a try to the Hojicha Tea Latte.

I recommend enjoying this rich matcha drink with Mitarashi Dango, Shiratama Dango, Anmitsu, and Strawberry Chocolate Mochi for a fun Japanese-inspired tea time!

The Ingredients of Banana Matcha

The ingredients of this Banana Milk Matcha Latte are so simple!

  • Ceremonial Grade Matcha Powder - Matcha powder makes or breaks the taste of a matcha latte. The quality of the matcha powder used greatly influences the taste of a matcha latte.
  • Banana - Use ripe, spotty bananas for maximum sweetness.
  • Oat milk - Or use any milk of your choice: almond, cashew, macadamia, or whole milk.
  • Optional - A pinch of salt, a dash of cinnamon, and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract/paste.

I love using oat milk for my matcha and coffee! Oat milk enhances their flavor, making it deliciously creamy and smooth. If you want to explore more matcha and oat milk combo, try my Matcha Boba Milk Tea and Vanilla Matcha Latte with Oat Milk!

How to make Banana Milk for Matcha

Making banana milk is so easy! Simply blend together banana and milk in a blender until the mixture reaches a creamy and smooth consistency. I like a powerful blender like Vitamix or Ninja blender.

If you're using optional ingredients like salt, vanilla, or cinnamon, add them here and blend together.

If you have some frozen bananas in your freezer, this healthy Matcha Banana Smoothie is a perfect place to use them.

One thing to note about this banana milk is that its color darkens over time. Think of bananas being oxidized and darkening their color over time, the same thing happens to the banana milk. So I recommend making this drink just before enjoying!

How to make a Banana Milk Matcha Latte

The steps to make this banana matcha latte are the same as making a regular matcha latte.

First, use a fine mesh sifter to sift the matcha powder into a matcha bowl. If you don't have a matcha bowl, you can use a small mixing bowl or soup bowl. Matcha powder can be clumpy while storing, so sifting is really important to make a smooth matcha latte.

Sifting bright green matcha powder through a small stainless steel sifter over a glass matcha bowl to prevent clumps before whisking.

Next, pour the hot water into the matcha powder. The best temperature to make matcha is 80°C/176°F. To make 176°F hot water, boil the filtered water and pour it into a glass to cool a bit. Then add it to matcha powder. If your kettle has temperature control, it works amazingly!

Then whisk vigorously with a bamboo whisk until thoroughly mixed and a foam forms on the surface. If you don't have a bamboo whisk, you can also use a milk frother(handheld or electric) or a small whisk. But a bamboo whisk works best for making a smooth and frothy matcha shot.

If you don't have any traditional matcha tools, I have a post sharing how to make matcha without a whisk!

To assemble the banana milk latte, fill a glass with ice cubes and pour banana milk over it. Top with freshly whisked matcha with the foam on top. Mix well and enjoy!

FAQ

Can I make this Banana Matcha Latte hot instead of iced?

Yes! Simply warm up the blended banana milk on the stovetop or using the microwave. Then pour it into a cup with the prepared matcha shot on top, mix, and enjoy. It's a cozy way of enjoying a banana milk matcha latte during fall and winter.

Can I use frozen bananas to make the banana milk?

Yes definitely! Frozen bananas work well, just blend longer until the desired consistency, or add a splash more milk and sweetener, like maple syrup, to make it less thick. Also, if you like smoothie consistency, try the Matcha Banana Smoothie!

What is the ideal temperature of the water for whisking matcha?

The best temperature to make matcha is 80°C/176°F. If your electric kettle has temperature control, set it to 80°C/176°F. If not, try the traditional method using a cup: boil the filtered water and pour it into a glass to cool a bit. Then add it to matcha powder.

How Long does the Homemade Banana Milk Last in the Fridge?

Store the banana milk in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. Shake well before use. The color of banana milk can darken slightly, like fresh bananas would when oxidized. But it's still tasty, and you won't see the color when mixed with matcha.
