Why Is This Smoothie Different From Others?

You’ll see this matcha smoothie is not a regular smoothie. It has swirls, and it has a foam on top. That’s because this recipe is made by pouring the smoothie into a prepared matcha and mixing it in a glass.

I love a good matcha and want to feel its intense flavor even in a smoothie. By preparing matcha with the traditional method with a bamboo whisk, then adding it to the smoothie, you can taste the rich matcha flavor without watering it down. Plus, you can save precious matcha foam from being blended in!

Of course, you can skip whisking and just blend everything in a blender to make this recipe even simpler.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Intense matcha flavor with foam on top.
  • Energy boosting from caffeine in matcha.
  • Naturally sweetened with banana and dates.
  • Quick and Easy!
  • Light and refreshing, perfect for a healthy breakfast or snack.
  • Gluten-free, dairy-free friendly, and vegan-friendly.

Ingredients

  • Matcha – Use high-quality ceremonial grade matcha powder for the best taste. If possible, choose a bold, rich matcha blend. Unfortunately, matcha doesn’t stay fresh long. To enjoy its rich flavor and vibrant green color, it’s best consumed within 3 weeks after opening. Store matcha in an air-tight container in a cool, dark, dry place.
  • Hot water – Use water at 176°F (80°C). See below for the details.
  • Frozen Banana – I keep peeled bananas in the freezer to make a smoothie. You can slice frozen bananas, so I cut them as I need.
  • Greek yogurt – I love using Greek yogurt for its creamy texture, but any yogurt works. Use coconut yogurt to make this recipe vegan.
  • Oat milk – Or any milk you like.
  • Medjool dates – Add caramel-y sweetness to the smoothie.
  • Ice cubes – Thicken the smoothie.

Water Temperature for Matcha – The water temperature used to prepare matcha affects the taste! Boiling water can ruin the delicate flavor of matcha, even if you’re using a high-quality ceremonial-grade matcha. For the best results, use water at 176°F (80°C). To achieve the perfect temperature, try this old-fashioned method: after boiling water, transfer it to an empty cup. It helps cool down hot water to the ideal temperature for matcha making. Then add it to the matcha and whisk!

Substitutions

  • Milk – any milk of your choice works.
  • Coconut Yogurt – make this recipe vegan.
  • Sweetener – instead of Medjool dates, use a few teaspoons of sweetener like maple syrup, honey, or agave.
  • Espresso – coffee lover? Add a shot or two of espresso instead of matcha to make this a banana coffee smoothie!
Frothy matcha and smoothie mixed in a glass.

Variations

  • Vanilla Paste – If you want to make this drink taste like banana cream pie, add a dollop of vanilla paste. I prefer vanilla paste over extract, as it has a bolder flavor and less alcohol smell.
  • Protein – add protein powder or collagen for pre/post workout fuel.
  • Greens – a handful of baby spinach or baby kale adds extra nutrition.
  • Frozen Vegetables – frozen veggies surprisingly add creaminess to the smoothie. Try riced cauliflower, zucchini, and avocado.
  • Frozen Fruits – berries, mangoes, and pineapples go well with matcha too!

Throw those ingredients above into a blender when making a banana smoothie to add your own spin!

How to Make a Matcha Banana Smoothie

You can make this smoothie in 2 ways: 1) the whisk and blend method for a frothy swirled smoothie, and 2)the blender method for a simple steps.

1) Whisk and blend method

Whisking matcha with a bamboo whisk.

Make matcha: Sift matcha powder into a small bowl. Add hot water and use a bamboo whisk to whisk vigorously until smooth and foam on the surface. Set aside.

Add the ingredients of banana smoothie in a blender.

Make the banana smoothie: Remove a seed from a Medjool date. Add all the ingredients of the banana smoothie to a high-speed blender.

Blend until creamy and smooth. Add a splash of oat milk if it’s too difficult to blend.

Assembly: Add matcha to a glass.

Pour the smoothie over the matcha. Mix (but do not overmix) and enjoy!

2) Blender method

If you don’t want to separately prepare the matcha and smoothie, just add all the ingredients in a blender (except hot water) and blend until smooth!

Add matcha, frozen bananas, yogurt, oat milk, a Medjool date, and ice cubes into a blender.

Blend until smooth and creamy. Add a splash of oat milk if it’s too difficult to blend.
