The Strawberry Matcha Latte Smoothie is a beautiful concoction of rich, silky matcha and creamy strawberry oat milk smoothie. This is an elevated version of an iced strawberry matcha latte for summer! Enjoy as a wellness breakfast, afternoon snack, or indulging dessert.
Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte is one of my favorite drinks during summer. The bold, rich matcha flavor and refreshing sweetness of strawberries are “matcha” made in heaven! So on a hot summer day, I came up with the idea of making it even more refreshing: a smoothie!
I call this recipe not just a strawberry matcha smoothie, but a Strawberry Matcha Latte Smoothie. Because the creamy strawberry smoothie made with oat milk beautifully replaces foamy milk in an iced matcha latte for the hot summer season.
Perfectly creamy and extra cold strawberry oat milk smoothie is a perfect summer refresher when swirled into matcha! Mild caffeine and antioxidants in matcha will refresh and nourish your body.
Ingredients and Substitution
- Matcha: The quality of matcha really matters the taste. So use high-quality ceremonial-grade matcha powder that has a vibrant green color and rich umami taste, and it should never taste too grassy or even dull. I love and trust the matcha from Ippodo!
- Frozen Strawberries: A bag of frozen strawberries is a great item to keep in your freezer that you can throw in smoothies and oatmeals. Strawberries are harvested and then quickly frozen to preserve their freshness and nutrition. If you’re not feeling like strawberries, you can also use raspberries and blueberries.
- Frozen Banana: The main sweetener of this smoothie recipe. Use a ripe sweet banana and freeze it the night before.
- Oat Milk: Adds milky creaminess. You can also use other milk you love like almond or regular milk.
- Hemp Seeds: This is optional but adds hidden plant protein and healthy fats.
- Sweetener: The amount of the sweetener you need depends on how sweet your bananas and strawberries are. Taste the smoothie and add your sweetener as you desire. I use maple syrup for mine but you can also use honey or avage.
Ingredient Tips
Yes, of course! The smoothie won’t be as thick and cold, and it’s going to be a thick milky latte. And the swirl pattern in a glass is going to be not as clear and distinct. But it will taste as good!
Add a scoop of your favorite protein powder or collagen instead of hemp seeds! Unflavored or vanilla protein will be great.
How to Matcha Green Tea
First, let’s prepare the matcha! By mixing matcha power and hot water, we’ll make a simple form of prepared matcha green tea called “Usucha”.
Use a small sieve to sift in matcha powder into a matcha bowl. Matcha powder can be clumpy in a can/bag, and it never resolves itself in water.
Then add hot water to the matcha bowl. But here is a tricky part! The boiling water is too hot for making matcha and going to ruin the taste and flavor of matcha. The fresh hot water around boiling temperature brings out the bitterness of matcha. so use 80°C or 176°F water for the best result.
To do so, the easiest way is to boil the water and then transfer it to a teacup to cool off a bit. This way, you don’t have to take out a thermometer every time you prepare matcha. Then pour hot water from the teacup over the matcha.
Lastly, Use a bamboo whisk to whisk vigorously until smooth and foam on the surface. Now Usucha is ready and you can enjoy it as is like espresso.
But to mix with a cold smoothie, we want the matcha to be a little bit chilled beforehand. So let it rest in a refrigerator to cool until the smoothie is ready.
How to Make Strawberry Matcha Latte Smoothie
Next, let’s make a strawberry oat milk smoothie! In a high-speed blender, add a frozen banana, strawberries, hemp seeds, oat milk, and maple syrup. Blend until creamy and thick. The smoothie might be too thick to blend at the beginning. Use a blender tamper to help the blender going.
Taste the smoothie and add more maple syrup for your taste.
Remove the matcha from the refrigerator and pour it into a glass. Pour the strawberry smoothie over the matcha and enjoy the beautiful swirl created in a glass. Mix well and enjoy!
Tips for Making a Beautiful Swirl
The thick smoothie creates a fun, distinct swirl in matcha. Soft, melting smoothie instantly dissolves into matcha. So do not add extra liquid to help the blender go.
