The Ingredients of Matcha Soda

  • Matcha: Use ceremonial-grade matcha that has a bright green color and bold flavor. Matcha should never taste too grassy or even dull. Store matcha in a dark, cool place. I trust and love matcha from Ippodo.
  • Maple Syrup: My sweetener of choice is maple syrup, but you can also use honey or agave syrup.
  • Sparkling Water: Adds fizz to the drink. Use unflavored sparkling water.

How to Make Matcha Soda at Home

Making this sparkling matcha soda is so easy!

First, let’s prepare the matcha. Sift in matcha in a matcha bowl. Sifting matcha helps achieve a smooth consistency.

Pour hot water and whisk with a bamboo whisk. Use 176°F (80°C) water for the best result, as boiling water ruins the flavor of matcha. Use a thermometer or cup. After boiling your water, transfer it to an empty cup. It helps cool down hot water a little bit to the ideal temperature for matcha making. Then add to matcha to whisk.

Then stir in maple syrup to sweeten.

Fill a glass with ice cubes. Add sparkling water and top with matcha. Mix and enjoy!

Variations

Adding syrup

This simple matcha soda is a great base for any flavor addition. Adding simple syrup or vanilla syrup to sweeten your soda. Fruit syrup like strawberry syrup will be great too.

Make it an ice cream float

To elevate a simple matcha drink to a delicious dessert, add scoops of ice cream on top to make it a matcha ice cream float! I added dairy-free vanilla ice cream on top of my matcha soda, or my Homemade Strawberry Ice Cream will be fun too!
