Dip a slice of bread into this Shichimi Togarashi Bread Dipping Oil! You can easily make this homemade dipping sauce for bread by just mixing extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and fresh herbs. And Shichimi Togarashi adds a little heat and irresistible flavor to this oil.
What is Shichimi Togarashi?
Inspired by Italian bread dipping oil, I spiced up irresistible dipping sauce for bread with Shichimi Togarashi.
Shichimi Togarashi is a Japanese chili-based spice blend seasoning that adds a delightful spicy kick and citrusy flavor to any dish. “Shichimi” means seven flavors and “Togarashi” means chili pepper. So “Shichimi Togarashi” is often translated as Japanese seven-spice powder because it’s a blend of 7 kinds of spices including chile pepper. The blended spices include, but are not limited to, red chilies, black sesame seeds, dried citrus peel, nori, Sansho pepper, hemp seeds, and poppy seeds. The blend of spices may vary slightly from brand to brand, offering unique flavor profiles.
Think of Shichimi Togarashi as an elevated chili powder. Just a sprinkle of it adds heat along with a nutty, citrusy, and pungent sensation. Adding a dash of Shichimi Togarashi over a simple bowl of soba or udon noodle soup really elevates the deliciousness.
And it’s also an amazing addition to the bread dipping oil for your next gatherings!
Ingredients of Shichimi Togarashi Bread Dipping Oil
- Extra virgin olive oil: Use good quality oil that you like. Choosing high-quality oil is crucial for this recipe; after all, you’re going to taste the oil itself.
- Balsamic vinegar: Adds sweetness and mild tartness.
- Shichimi Togarashi: You can find one at Amazon. But I highly recommend trying to find one at your local spice shop! Fresh spice tastes so much better.
- Garlic: Use fresh ones and grate.
- Scallion: Finely minced scallions add a nice texture.
- Basil: Use fresh basil for the best flavor.
- Sesame seeds: I used white ones but black also works. They add an extra nutty flavor and crunchy texture.
- Flaky salt: This oil blend is packed with flavor, so a tiny pinch of salt is all it needs.
Mix everything and dip slices of bread!
