  • 5-ingredient Mango and Matcha Green Tea Smoothie
The mango smoothie is poured into frothy matcha in a glass and it's topped with frozen mango chunks.

What I don’t like about typical matcha smoothies is that they are not matcha-y enough for me. Since the matcha powder is evenly blended into the smoothie, its flavor becomes much milder.

To enjoy matcha’s keen, awakening flavor and naturally occurring frothy form, this recipe prepares matcha in the traditional method with a bamboo whisk. Then it’s swirled into a creamy mango smoothie to create a sweet, tropical matcha drink!

This matcha smoothie is like your morning cup of matcha and smoothie combined together without losing both key flavor and texture. Enjoy your perfect sip to enrich your morning routine.

  • Perfect for healthy breakfast, post-workout, and afternoon snack

Ingredients

For the matcha

  • Matcha Powder – Using high-quality ceremonial-grade matcha powder makes a huge difference. High-quality matcha has a vibrant green color and a rich umami flavor. It should never taste too grassy or dull. My go-to matcha brand is Ippodo, I love and trust the matcha from them!

For the mango smoothie

  • Mango (frozen) – tropical sweetness and creaminess.
  • Banana (frozen) – banana also adds natural sweetness and creaminess. Not a fan of bananas? Simply swap them with more manoges.
  • Hemp Seeds (optional) – Hemp seeds add extra protein and healthy fats to the smoothie, making you feel full for longer.
  • Oat milk (or any preferred milk) – dairy-free base for the smoothie. Use gluten free oat milk if you’re sensitive to gluten.

Instructions

This recipe prepares the matcha tea and mango smoothie separately, then combines both in a glass. This way, you can enjoy intense, frothy matcha made using the traditional method without diluting its rich flavor.

  1. Assembly: In a glass, add matcha and pour the smoothie over the matcha.

Tip for Making Good Matcha – The water temperature is crucial when preparing matcha. Boiling water can ruin the delicate flavor of matcha, even if you’re using a high-quality ceremonial-grade matcha. For the best results, use water at 176°F (80°C). To achieve the perfect temperature, try this old-fashioned method: after boiling water, transfer it to an empty cup. It helps cool down hot water to the ideal temperature for matcha making. Then add to matcha to whisk!

Tips for the Best Matcha Smoothie

  • Use frozen mangoes and bananas for a creamy texture.
  • Sift matcha powder for smooth matcha.
  • Use a bamboo whisk for the creamy matcha froth.
  • Use water at 176°F (80°C) for the best matcha taste.
  • Don’t mix matcha and smoothie too much. You don’t want to dilute both flavors.

Variations

  • Veggies – Instead of bananas, you can also use cauliflower, zucchini, or avocado. When swapping bananas for veggies, add a splash of sweetener, like maple syrup, to add extra sweetness.
  • Protein Powder – hemp seeds add some protein to this smoothie, but if you want to bump up the protein intake, add a scoop of vanilla or unflavored protein powder.
  • Extra fiber – throw in some oats, flax seeds, or chia seeds.

FAQ

Can I make this smoothie without bananas?

Yes! You can use bananas with more frozen mangoes. Or swap bananas with frozen veggies like cauliflower, zucchini, and avocados. If you’re substituting with vegetables, add a splash of sweetener, like maple syrup, to add extra sweetness.
