This vanilla matcha latte is a creamy green tea drink made with matcha, oat milk, and vanilla paste, with a hint of sweetness from maple syrup. Vanilla flavor brings a cozy coffee shop feeling to your home, and matcha provides an energy boost without a caffeine crash.

I always find homemade matcha latte tastes way better and is so much cheaper than one from coffee shops!
Compared to coffee, making good matcha is relatively easy as it doesn’t require fancy equipment like an expensive espresso machine. A $10 bamboo whisk will do an amazing job making smooth, frothy matcha.
This vanilla matcha latte brings a cozy coffee shop feeling and a good sip to your home without breaking the bank.
Enjoy hot or cold, depending on the season and your mood. Perfect for morning or as a mid-day energy booster. It’s vegan and dairy-free!

Ingredients

- Matcha – Use high-quality ceremonial grade matcha for the best results! Vibrabt green, fresh powder smells amazing when you open the package. Unfortunately, matcha doesn’t have a long shelf life. After the opening, store in an air-tight container in a cool, dark, dry place, and it’s best consumed within 3 weeks
- Hot water – Use water at 176°F (80°C). See below for the details.
- Oat milk – You can use any milk of your choice. I used Barista blend oat milk to create a fluffy foam on top of my latte.
- Vanilla Paste – I found vanilla extract adds an alcohol smell to my latte, which kills the rich aroma of matcha. So, I like to use vanilla bean paste in my latte. Vanilla paste has beans in it and a slightly bolder flavor than extract.
- Maple Syrup – Use any sweetener you like, maple syrup, agave syrup, date syrup, and honey.
Water Temperature for Matcha – The water temperature used to prepare matcha affects the taste! Boiling water can ruin the delicate flavor of matcha, even if you’re using a high-quality ceremonial-grade matcha. For the best results, use water at 176°F (80°C). To achieve the perfect temperature, try this old-fashioned method: after boiling water, transfer it to an empty cup. It helps cool down hot water to the ideal temperature for matcha making. Then add matcha to whisk!
How to Make a Vanilla Matcha Latte

In a small bowl, sift in matcha powder. Add hot water and use a bamboo whisk to whisk vigorously until smooth and foamy on the surface. Set aside.

Combine oat milk, vanilla syrup, and maple syrup.

For an iced latte, froth the milk using a handheld frother or milk frother.
For a hot latte, warm the milk, then froth.

Fill a glass with ice cubes and add the frothed milk. Pour matcha over it and stir to enjoy. For a hot latte, add milk and matcha into a mug and stir.

Sprinkle with a dash of matcha on top(optional).

FAQ
Of course! But I found vanilla extract adds a slight alcohol smell to the latte. Vanilla paste doesn’t bother matcha aroma as much and has a slightly bolder flavor than extract.
While a bamboo whisk creates the most beautiful, creamy matcha foam, you can also use a handheld frother or small metal whisk in a pinch. Or if you only have a fork or spoon, add 1-2 tablespoons of hot water to matcha and mix to make a paste. Then, add the rest of the hot water and mix vigorously. Shaking room-temperature water, matcha, and ice cubes in a jar also works.
If you don’t have a frother, you can add milk, vanilla paste, and sweetener in a jar, secure the lid, and shake well to combine. It won’t be as frothy, but it still tastes good.
Yes, matcha is the powdered green tea leaves, so it has more caffeine than steeped green tea. You’ll feel an energy boost like coffee, but caffeine in matcha is absorbed more slowly into the body, giving a longer energy boost.
Bitter matcha indicates 1) you’re using low-quality matcha or 2) the water was too hot. Make sure to use high-quality ceremonial grade matcha that is not too old from the opening date (ideally within 3 weeks). And use hot water at. around 176°F (80°C) when preparing.
To prevent clumpy matcha, sift the matcha powder before use.
The ingredients of this vanilla matcha latte are naturally vegan and vegetarian. But, always check the labels to avoid contamination.
I recommend enjoying it immediately as it loses precious foam as time goes.
